IOWA CITY, Iowa — In the first Big Ten wrestling dual of the season, No. 7 Iowa battles No. 15 Illinois in a border rivalry at 7 p.m. CT on Dec. 1, 2017 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes (4-0) have cruised in their first four duals this year, while Illinois (1-1) lost its opener to Missouri before beating Fresno State.
Iowa leads the all-time series 50-26-1. Illinois won 21 of the first 22 duals, but since then the Hawkeyes are 49-5-1 against the Fighting Illini. Iowa has won the last seven duals.
Illinois coach Jim Heffernan was a part of three Iowa national title teams under legendary coach Dan Gable. Twice he placed second at the NCAA meet and won a national title in 1986. Heffernan was a four-time Big Ten champion and ranks seventh in Iowa history with 131 wins.
Iowa coach Tom Brands was a three-time NCAA champion and gold medalist at the 1996 Olympics.
