IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s 56-14 win against Nebraska on Black Friday kept the Hawkeyes at No. 7 in the final regular-season Land of 10 Power Poll.
The Hawkeyes finished 7-5 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play. It was an interesting season for Iowa, which beat Ohio State and Nebraska by a combined 73 points, but also lost to Purdue and Northwestern. All three of Iowa’s non-conference opponents won at least seven games. North Texas finished 9-3 and won its Conference USA division. Wyoming and Iowa State each won seven games.
Overall, the Hawkeyes played nine bowl teams, including six that won at least nine games. Iowa won three of four rivalry trophies and beat Iowa State, Minnesota and Nebraska for the third straight season.
After stopping Ohio State 55-24, Iowa lost 38-14 at undefeated Wisconsin. Last week on senior day at Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes fizzled in a 24-15 loss to Purdue. Winning decisively against Nebraska was important for the program as it entered bowl practices.
“If we hadn’t won [Friday], it would have been quite a challenge — the whole month would have been,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “This one doesn’t assure of anything moving forward but it puts everybody in a better place mentally and that’s important.
Friday’s win capped a two-year domination of the Huskers in which Iowa won by a combined 72 points. The Hawkeyes rushed for 313 yards and 6 touchdowns.
“They’re certainly a marquee team and they’ve got a lot of talented guys,” Iowa guard Sean Welsh said. “So it’s always a big win for us.”
Wisconsin remained No. 1 in the Land of 10 Power Poll, which is voted upon by Land of 10’s 13 writers. Ohio State was second and Penn State was third.
Iowa will compete in a bowl game next month. The primary options are the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, the Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara, Calif., the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn., and the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City.
