Iowa State LB Marcel Spears named Big 12 Defensive Player of Week

For the second straight week, Iowa State linebacker Marcel Spears was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Spears had 9 tackles before sealing Iowa State’s 14-7 upset of No. 4 TCU with an interception with 1:16 to play. A 61-yard interception return for a touchdown against Texas Tech earned Spears the honor a week ago.

This marks the fourth straight week a Cyclone has earned a weekly league honor. Iowa State is 6-2 overall and tied for first in the Big 12 at 4-1. The victory over TCU made Iowa State the first team since 2011 to beat two top five teams in a season.

The Cyclones rose to No. 14 in the AP Poll afterward. Meanwhile, the upset caused the Taco Bell in Ames, Iowa, to run out of a variety of supplies.

Spears, a sophomore, has been a critical part of the Cyclones’ success. He’ll go for his third straight weekly honors Saturday against West Virginia. Iowa State will be seeking its fifth consecutive victory.
