Iowa ranks No. 6 in first Land of 10 Power Poll

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s convincing 24-3 season-opening victory against Wyoming on Saturday propelled the Hawkeyes to No. 6 in the inaugural 2017 Land of 10 Power Poll, which was released Sunday.

Iowa (1-0) did not receive votes last month in the preseason AP poll, but the Hawkeyes defense looked in midseason form against the Cowboys. The Hawkeyes held potential NFL first-round draft pick Josh Allen  to 174 passing yards and intercepted 2 passes. The Cowboys, which won the Mountain West’s Mountain Division last year, totaled 233 yards and never reached the red zone.

Linebacker Josey Jewell was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Jewell recorded 14 tackles — including 2.5 for loss — and had 2 sacks. He also broke up a pass and his quarterback pressure in the fourth quarter forced an interception.

Ohio State led the power poll after its 49-21 win at Indiana on Thursday. Penn State was ranked second and Michigan was third. The Big Ten finished 11-3 last week with only Purdue, Rutgers and Indiana losing games.

I ranked Iowa fifth in the poll. The Hawkeyes produced the conference’s most dominant defensive effort, especially against a quality quarterback. The offense was inconsistent and had 4 turnovers, but new starting quarterback Nathan Stanley also passed for 3 touchdowns. Running back Akrum Wadley rushed for 116 yards and wide receivers Nick Easley and Matt VandeBerg combined for 6 catches for 96 yards. Despite two starters out with injuries, the offensive line competed.

The Hawkeyes face another challenge this week at rival Iowa State. While the Cyclones have won just 12 total games dating back to 2013, they’ve beaten the Hawkeyes in three of their last six meetings.
