Iowa football is always the main topic in Iowa Breakfast Club, Land of 10’s daily Hawkeyes notebook — but we cover news, notes and analysis across Hawkeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Iowa football, recruiting, basketball and more.

A bold statement

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports said the 49ers “may have scored a steal” in drafting former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard in April. In a story evaluating the quarterback situation for every team, Davis said he even thinks Beathard may start later in the season if San Francisco struggle this season. It’s a smart point and very likely may happen. The 49ers will want to see what they have in him.

Don’t say Kirk Ferentz doesn’t care

Despite thoughts to the contrary, Kirk Ferentz cares about the Cy-Hawk rivalry. He considers it insulting when people assume otherwise, as Marc Morehouse of the Cedar Rapids Gazette wrote. If the Iowa football coach wants to change minds he needs to do jumping jacks on Saturday. If that reference doesn’t make sense, go read the story.

The importance of James Daniels

Starting center James Daniels is expected back from a knee injury to face Iowa State on Saturday. It matters. A lot. Land of 10 explains why Daniels’ return is so vital.

Is there a tendency?

New Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz was tasked with ensuring it’s harder for opponents to predict what plays the Hawkeyes will run. Land of 10 explains why, in that regard, his debut was a success.

The Kirk Ferentz rebuttal

Ferentz wasn’t a fan of what former ESPN analyst Ed Cunningham said about the way the Hawkeyes handled Beathard and his hamstring injury in the Outback Bowl last season. Ferentz responded on Tuesday to Cunningham, saying Beathard wasn’t medically at risk.

Awards season

The awards continue to roll in for linebacker Josey Jewell this week. He took home the Bednarik Award Player of the Week honor on Tuesday.  The Big Ten named him its Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. He was also named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
