Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell’s latest honor came Tuesday afternoon, as the Associated Press named him as a first-team preseason All-American.
Jewell ranked second in the Big Ten last season with 124 tackles. That productivity helped him become one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, given annually to the best linebacker in college football.
He’s also viewed as one of the nation’s top linebackers for 2017, joining fellow linebackers Arden Key (LSU) and Azeem Victor (Washington) as first-team honorees. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior has started 30 straight games over the last three seasons for the Hawkeyes after redshirting in 2013.
Jewell is one of nine Big Ten players the AP selected for its preseason All-America teams.
