49ers QB C.J. Beathard a competitor, says George Kittle
Former Iowa and current San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard had another solid outing in a preseason game. On Saturday night, Beathard completed 7 of 12 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown in a 33-14 loss to the Denver Broncos. San Francisco tight end and former Iowa teammate George Kittle, who caught 3 passes for 33 yards and Beathard’s touchdown, told Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee the quarterback is “the most competitive person I’ve ever met in my entire life.”

NFL updates of former Iowa players
New England Patriots running back LeShun Daniels was unable to play against Houston after an undisclosed injury. Daniels led the Patriots in rushing against Jacksonville in the opener.
Texans coach Bill O’Brien called wide receiver Riley McCarron “the spitting image of Wes Welker.” McCarron returned the opening kickoff in a preseason game against New England.
The Indianapolis Colts waived wide receiver Tevaun Smith with an injury settlement. Smith, who is eligible to sign with another team, suffered a groin injury early in camp.
Buffalo Bills cornerback Greg Mabin has taken reps with the first-team defense during camp. Mabin intercepted a pass against Philadelphia last Thursday night.
Minnesota Vikings kicker Marshall Koehn is “neck-and-neck” with Kai Forbath for the position, wrote Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune.
After a back injury early in camp has kept him out of Minnesota’s first two preseason games, Vikings tackle Riley Reiff expects to play next week against the San Francisco 49ers.
