Indiana-Indiana State basketball: Preview

Indiana begins its 2017-18 season at home against Indiana State.

The Hoosiers have won their last 32 home openers and have had success against Indiana State. Indiana leads the Sycamores 17-5 in the series all-time. Indiana has also won 19 consecutive season openers, going 97-20 all-time.

The game is Archie Miller’s first as the head coach of the Hoosiers. Miller, who’s 38 years old, had been the coach at Dayton the previous six seasons. He was 139-63 with the Flyers, leading the program to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four years. That included an Elite Eight run in 2014. Miller is the 29th head coach in Indiana basketball history.

In its to exhibition games, Indiana came away with wins. First the Hoosiers beat Marian University, 93-62. Then they defeated the University of Indianapolis, 74-53. Against Marian, four Hoosiers scored in double figures. Devonte Green led all players with 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting. He also had 7 assists.

Against the University of Indianapolis, Robert Johnson led Indiana with 18 points while shooting 7-for-15 from the field. Freddie McSwain Jr. (12 points) and De’Ron Davis (11 points) also hit double digits in scoring.

“Good win for the team,” Miller said after the win against the University of Indianapolis. “Like I told them after the game, anytime you win you enjoy it because they’re so hard to come by and we’re getting ready to experience what that really feels like here as we get ready to get started into the opening season and into the opening game.

“Because I think everything that we’re going to be dealing with is going to be hard here early on. And we’re going to have to really earn the right to win games. So I was proud of their effort. I thought some guys did some better things than they did last week.

“I thought some guys didn’t do some things we asked them to do. That’s part of it. And we’ll learn from it. We have a big week of improvement with a huge, huge home opener on Friday, and that’s what we’re focused in on right now.”
