Indiana-Illinois preview, keys to the game

The Hoosiers and Illini will meet for the first time since 2013, where the Hoosiers won 52-35 in Bloomington. It’ll be the first meeting between the two teams in Champaign since 2012, where the Hoosiers also won 31-17.

Overall though, the Illini lead the series 45-24-2.

The two teams are fairly even in statistics, though the Hoosiers hold the slight edge in most, including points per game (25.9-16.7), total yards (369-303) and total yards allowed (349.3-400.2).

Leading the Hoosiers on defense is linebacker Tegray Scales, who has 76 tackles, 10.5 of those for a loss with five sacks and one interception.

Behind him is safety Chase Dutra, who’s got 70 tackles and a forced fumble along with linebacker Chris Covington who’s tallied 66 tackles including 8.5 for a loss and 1.5 sacks.

Peyton Ramsey is still the Hoosiers’ passing leader with 1,252 yards and 10 touchdowns, but Richard Lagow played in the team’s loss to the Badgers and has thrown for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns.

Simmie Cobbs Jr. has been on the receiving end of both passers and has 59 catches for 662 yards and six scores.

Morgan Ellison is the team’s leading rusher with 490 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also been spelled in the backfield by Cole Gest, who has 204 yards, while Ramsey is second on the team in rushing with 327 yards and two scores.

In the loss to the Badgers, Lagow was 20-of-34 for 226 yards and two touchdowns to go with two interceptions.

Cobbs and Devonte Williams each had a touchdown, while Luke Timian led the team with 64 yards.

No Hoosier ran for more than 30 yards and the team had just 87 yards on the ground total.

Jeff George Jr. leads the Illini with 1,012 yards and five touchdowns. Ricky Smalling is the leading wide receiver with 415 yards and two touchdowns, while Mike Epstein leads the backfield with 346 yards and three touchdowns.

Linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips is the team’s leading tackler with 64 including four for a loss and one sack.
