Iowa football is always the main topic in Iowa Breakfast Club, Land of 10’s daily Hawkeyes notebook — but we cover news, notes and analysis across Hawkeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Iowa football, recruiting, basketball and more.
Change is here
This is the first year of an early December signing period for college football. Chris Cuellar of the Des Moines Register chatted with Iowa recruiting coordinator Kelvin Bell on how it impacts the Hawkeyes. Don’t be surprised if Iowa asks its early commits to sign during the Dec 20-22 period.
One last ride
Class of 2018 commits Samson Evans and Jeff Jenkins played on the Prairie Ridge High School (Ill.) varsity football team as freshman. Now, four years later they are looking to repeat as state champions. Joe Stevenson of the Northwest Herald takes a look back at how they made Prairie Ridge one of the top programs in the state.
Who has next?
Which five freshmen are in line to make an impact this fall? Land of 10 answered the question. Of course defensive end A.J. Epenesa is one of the five.
Former Iowa tackle Bryan Bulaga sustained a sprained right ankle at practice on Wednesday. He told Rob Demovsky of ESPN he doesn’t think the injury will keep out for the regular season opener. Bulaga will not play in the final two preseason games.
The keys up front
Both Matt and Anthony Nelson are tall, lanky defensive ends. The similarities don’t stop their. The Nelsons are likely the keys to figuring out how well the defensive line plays this season. Also, here is the Land of 10 projected depth chart on the defensive line.
Meet the new leaders
Iowa unveiled its 17- member leadership council on Wednesday. It didn’t provide clarity on the quarterback situation as both Tyler Wiegers and Nathan Stanley made it. It did potentially hint at freshman Tristan Wirfs playing this season. Epenesa is the only other freshman on the council.
The new recruiting director
Luke Feddersen of Rivals caught up with 2019 offensive line commit Ezra Miller. He has a new job: taking a lead on recruiting other in-state talent.
Best in the world
Former Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman will try to earn that title Friday at the World Championships in Paris, writes J.R. Ogden of the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
