Alabama high school state playoffs
The Alabama Class 7A state playoffs were highlighted by a rematch from the regular season: Hoover vs. Thompson. Auburn commit Shedrick Jackson was held in check without a catch for the first time all season, but 2019 commit George Pickens stepped up. Despite winning 31-12, Hoover only completed 6 passes all night. Pickens was responsible for all 6 of those. He accumulated 112 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown on a catch-and-run from a slant pattern. The victory moves Hoover into the state title game yet again next week, where it’ll face McGill-Toolen in a rematch of last season.
McGill-Toolen made it to the championship thanks to a narrow overtime victory over Central-Phenix City and top Auburn wide receiver target Justyn Ross. The semifinal ended on a wild sequence that including a Ross touchdown in overtime to, in theory, send the game to a second overtime. Unfortunately for Ross and Central, the ensuing extra point was blocked to move McGill-Toolen onto the championship with a 27-26 win.

Going into the week, Austin versus Pinson Valley in the 6A quarterfinals was pitched as the game of the week. It lived up to expectations, as did Auburn running back commit Asa Martin and Auburn 2019 quarterback target Bo Nix.
In the end, Pinson Valley pulled out a 51-50 overtime victory that included several plot twists. Martin rushed for 261 yards on 29 carries, including touchdown runs of 4 yards, 59 yards and 67 yards. It helped Austin out to a big lead. But Nix led a monumental comeback in which he threw for 400 yards and tossed 7 touchdown passes. He also completed a 2-point conversion in overtime to clinch the victory in dramatic fashion.
Georgia high school state playoffs
Brookwood advanced to the Georgia Class 7A semifinals after a 35-28 victory highlighted by Auburn wide receiver commit Matthew Hill’s performance. Hill changed the entire landscape of the game on the first play of the second half. Brookwood entered halftime with a 7-point deficit, but Hill returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to tie the game. From there, Hill took over. He ended the contest with 260 all-purpose yards, including 11 rushes for 104 yards and 4 catches for 46 yards. Brookwood will face linebacker prospect JJ Peterson and Colquitt County in the semifinals.
There aren’t many stats to record from the game, but Auburn commit Michael Harris and offensive line target Dylan Wonnum helped Tucker advance to the state semifinals to face Coffee County.
Carver-Atlanta slipped past Jones County with a 26-21 victory due in large part to Auburn safety commit Quindarious Monday. While he’s a head-hunter on defense, most of his damage in the state quarterfinals was done on the offensive side of the ball. Offensively, Monday caught 4 passes for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns, which was the big difference-maker in the win. Carver advanced to the state semifinals to play Warner Robins.
Florida high school state playoffs
Once again, Auburn quarterback commit Joey Gatewood was forced to split possessions, but Bartram Trail cruised to a 38-13 win over Fleming Island. Gatewood completed 9-of-14 passing for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns. He only rushed for 13 yards in the victory. Gatewood’s 2 touchdown passes were a 5-yard completion and a 37-yard completion. Bartram Trail will play in the state semifinals next week.
If there was one Auburn-related game that rivaled Austin-Pinson Valley, it was the Florida 5A quarterfinal matchup between American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons. For American Heritage, Auburn wide receiver target Anthony Schwartz played a major role in the 58-57 triple-overtime victory. Schwartz accounted for 3 touchdowns in the win. He snagged 2 touchdown catches, including the ultimate game-winning score in the third overtime. Schwartz also caught a 25-yard touchdown and returned a kick for a touchdown.
Auburn running back commit Shaun Shivers did it again as his team cruised into the state championship in two weeks with a 49-3 win. He accumulated 202 yards of offense and added two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns was a 76-yard touchdown run. The other was a 46-yard receiving score.
