Horned Frogs dominating 3rd down on offense and defense

When third down rolls around, there’s not a better team in the nation on both offense and defense than TCU.

The Horned Frogs’ third down offense has been well-documented in its success. At one point this year, the Frogs were on pace to post the highest single-season third down conversion percentage since 2004.

They’ve cooled down since then, but TCU is still an elite offensive unit in third down scenarios. The Horned Frogs are the sixth-best team in the country on third down, converting exactly 50 percent of their chances.

Unlike the teams above them on that ranking, TCU is also outstanding defensively on third down. Opponents are converting only 26.7 percent of their third down opportunities against the Frogs. That mark is seventh-best in the nation, trailing just behind another Big 12 team, the Texas Longhorns.

What this means is that TCU has the ability to extend drives and keep opposing defenses on their heels while giving the Horned Frogs’ defense an opportunity to rest. When that unit gets on the field, they’re better equipped to shut down opposing offenses quickly, which prevents the opposing defense from catching a break.

It’s a vicious circle. And it’s one the Horned Frogs are exploiting very well this season.
