Handicapping a run by Penn State’s Saquon Barkley at the Heisman, DaeSean Hamilton sparkles and more

Saquon Barkley-Penn State-Heisman

We hope you’ll start your day with us here at the Landof10.com as we work to prepare you for everything that you need to know – Monday through Friday – around the world of Penn State sports. Whether it’s football, basketball, wrestling, hockey, baseball or just a wild story we hope you’ll find interesting, we’re here to share it all with you.

This is your Penn State Wake-Up Call for Thursday, Aug. 10. Let’s get started.

And they’re (almost) off!

Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record handicaps the Heisman Trophy race coming out of the gate, and has Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield first and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley second — with a bullet.

Bodani points out that Barkley could potentially out-distance the field in November, when the weather turns and defenses tire.

Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley did an interview with the Big Ten Network’s crew, which visited Happy Valley on Wednesday.

The Nittany Lions’ backfield tandem also teamed up to deliver a birthday cake to BTN.com writer Tom Dienhart.

Spry senior

Coach James Franklin called senior wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton “as polished and productive of a wideout as I’ve been around in a camp setting” on Wednesday, according to Mark Brennan of Fightonstate.com. “I think he’s gonna have a huge year for us,” Franklin added, after a practice in which Hamilton scored a touchdown on a 60-yard catch-and-run.

Redshirt revival

Brennan also corralled wideout, Brandon Polk, who appealed to the NCAA for a medical redshirt after appearing in three games last season – an appeal that was recently granted. “I was really relieved I got that season back,” Polk told Brennan. “Some people, I guess they’ll play too much and don’t get that. So I’m blessed and just happy I was able to get it.”

Ricky, don’t lose that number

Quarterbacks coach Ricky Rahne tells Greg Pickel of Pennlive.com he bought a house in State College, something he declined to do when he worked under Franklin at Vanderbilt, believing the staff will be in Happy Valley a while. “To me, this is the greatest place in the world because my wife is happy, and when my wife is happy, I’m happy,” Rahne said. Smart man.

Let’s go to the videotape

The BTN crew provided all kinds of snippets during its visit to practice. First, there were interviews with Franklin, offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and defensive coordinator Brent Pry:

Host Dave Revsine offered this view of a connection between McSorley and wide receiver Juwan Johnson:

And finally, Dienhart gave us a look at the defensive line in action:
