Gus Malzahn doesn’t address report of agents presenting new contract terms to Auburn

ATLANTA — With a little more than 24 hours until the SEC Championship Game, Gus Malzahn doesn’t want to talk about his contract situation at Auburn.

Malzahn didn’t directly answer a question about a report yesterday that stated his agents approached Auburn president Steven Leath with terms for a new contract.

The fifth-year Auburn coach is reportedly the top candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Arkansas, where he played and coached for a brief time.

“I’m focused on this game,” Malzahn said. “This is for the SEC championship, and I’m the head coach at Auburn.”

According to a report from Zach Barnett of Football Scoop, representatives for Malzahn “presented a package to Auburn president Steven Leath to keep him in blue and orange.” Barnett also reported Malzahn’s terms were “substantial,” yet he didn’t think Auburn would let him go elsewhere.

Tom Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Thursday that Malzahn was Arkansas’ top candidate in its coaching search, which is going on at the same time as one for a new athletic director. Longtime Arkansas columnist Wally Hall, who is friends with Malzahn, wrote a passionate plea to get Malzahn to coach the Razorbacks on Thursday.

In 2013, Auburn announced a contract extension with Malzahn the night before the SEC Championship Game after reports surfaced of interest from Texas. Auburn kicks off against Georgia tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT on CBS.
