ATHENS — Georgia is already preparing to be without its top cornerback at Notre Dame. And whether the man who replaces him can go also appears to still be a question.
Aaron Davis, the senior who started but did not finish the season opener, was in uniform but not fully participating in Tuesday’s practice. While the defense was going through a walk-through during the media viewing period, Davis was watching while sophomore Tyrique McGhee worked at left cornerback.
Davis left the Appalachian State game with a hamstring injury that had been bothering him, and McGhee replaced him. The fact Davis was in uniform and watching is still a decent sign, as the experienced senior may not need full reps to know what to do in the game. McGhee, who has never started a game at Georgia, would need those reps more.
Still, Georgia is already set to be without senior cornerback Malkom Parrish, who had foot surgery during the preseason and was categorized Monday as “week-to-week” by head coach Kirby Smart. So it would help to have Davis, one of the more dependable defensive backs on its roster.
Sophomore J.R. Reed was working at star and safety again, with freshman Richard LeCounte going in at safety in the nickel defense, pushing Reed down to star. That’s the way the secondary lined up against Appalachian State.
A few other notes from the media viewing period:
- The offensive line was the same as Monday: Redshirt freshman Solomon Kindley with the first team at right guard, after not playing there in the opener because of an ankle injury. Junior Kendall Baker remains at left guard.
- Freshman receiver J.J. Holloman, who has dealt with a hamstring since the preseason, also still appears limited. He was not doing routes in a quarterback passing drill, though he was in uniform and participating in an individual drill.
- Freshman Jake Fromm and senior Brice Ramsey continue to be the quarterbacks working on one field, with walk-on freshman Stetson Bennett working as a scout-teamer on the other field.
