Baker Mayfield has been a man among boys throughout the 2017 season.
Nearly every time Mayfield suits up, he’s the best player on the field and he knows it; he performs like he knows it, as detailed by FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt.
“This guy plays with the reckless swagger and this gunslinger mentality and yet, he’s got the efficiency like he’s Drew Brees or Russell Wilson.”
Through nine games this season, Mayfield has completed an FBS-leading 71.7 percent of his 272 attempts for 3,226 yards and 28 touchdowns, which rank Nos. 2 and 3 in the nation, respectively. More impressively, after setting the FBS record last season with a passer efficiency rating of 196.4, Mayfield is well on his way to shattering his own record, as he’s improved that effort to a rating of 201.6 in 2017.
With all of the aforementioned packaged into one 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame, the result is a Heisman frontrunner that radiates seemingly unprecedented confidence each time he dons crimson and cream.
“What I love about him the most is the swagger he brings to his team,” Klatt said. “In a day & age when all of us run to safe spaces and likeminded thinkers to get our news and opinions, Baker Mayfield is unapologetic in his confidence that he will go out there and beat you and be your daddy at the same time.”

Such confidence has played a considerable role in Mayfield orchestrating the nation’s top-ranked offense at 608.2 yards per game on the heels of his record-setting, 598-yard effort in a win over then-No. 11 Oklahoma State in Bedlam to lift the Sooners to 8-1.
Arguably his tallest test of the season remains, though.
On Saturday, Mayfield and his Sooners will square off with No. 6 TCU and a Horned Frogs defense that’s nothing short of elite. As we’ve seen time and time again from Mayfield, though, pitted against an elite defense on a national stage or not, “he will go out there and beat you and be your daddy at the same time.”
