Unless you’ve been living under a rock since early September, you’re well aware that Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has been the top talent in college football this season.
The Sooners senior gunslinger has spent his final season in Oklahoma torching defenses to the tune of 4,097 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, which each rank No. 2 nationally, while his 71.4 percent completion rate and 203.3 passer efficiency rating each headline college football.
Simply put, Mayfield has been nothing short of elite throughout the 2017 season, and thus, earned high praise from FOX Sports analyst and former Heisman-winning quarterback Matt Leinart, who placed Mayfield atop his latest Heisman Hopefuls list yet again.
“Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield; putting together one of the best seasons we’ve seen from a player, from a quarterback ever in college football history,” Leinart said.
“It’s really remarkable the career he has had,” Leinart added. “If he beats TCU, all he has to do is play well. Even if they lose, I think Baker Mayfield by far-and-away is going to take home the next Heisman trophy.”

With his final regular season as a Sooner in the rearview, Mayfield has guided Oklahoma to an 11-1 record, a Bg 12 Championship appearance and a No. 3 College Football Playoff ranking. But while Oklahoma still has plenty of work to do in hopes of adding another Big 12 title, and potentially, a National Championship to its trophy case, it’s safe to say Mayfield has all but secured the 2017 Heisman Memorial Trophy.
After putting forth what Leinart dubbed as one of the greatest seasons in college football history, it would certainly be hard to imagine the honor going elsewhere.
Mayfield finished No. 3 and No. 4 in the Heisman voting in 2016 and 2015, respectively.
