Yes, there’s a Peyton Manning-Greg Schiano connection for Tennessee fans to consider. And it’s something else.
On Sunday, some Vols fans became heated in a hurry after reports surfaced that Tennessee was close to hiring the Ohio State defensive coordinator as the Volunteers’ next coach. Well, there’s a story that shows Schiano rubbed Manning the wrong way once as well.
In 2012, when Schiano was coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Bucs faced Manning’s younger brother, Eli, with Eli operating as the New York Giants’ quarterback. Late during the eventual Giants win, Schiano ordered Bucs players to attack the offensive line aggressively as New York players tried to kill the clock by kneeling down.
That move rubbed then-Giants coach Tom Coughlin the wrong way, as relayed in this story by NFL.com’s Michael Silver. Then the Bucs tried a similar approach later that season on the older Manning, then with the Denver Broncos. And Manning wasn’t pleased at all.
Here’s more from Silver’s piece:
As it turned out, opposing coaches like Coughlin were hardly the only ones upset by Schiano’s approach. When Schiano ordered the Bucs to pull a similar maneuver against Eli’s big brother, Peyton, in the final stages of a 31-23 defeat to the Denver Broncos last December, the future Hall of Fame quarterback was not pleased.
“Peyton cussed him out,” recalls former Bucs defensive end Michael Bennett, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent last March. “And I ain’t never heard Peyton cuss.”
So there you have it, Vols fans. That’s something, all right.
