Former Alabama QB Ken Stabler in elite company among left-handers

Left-handed people are much more rare than right-handers. In fact, only 10 percent of the entire world is left-handed.

Add in the small chance that person makes it to the NFL, then turn that person into a quarterback and that number is incredibly small. Among them is former Alabama quarterback Ken Stabler, who is one of the best left-handed quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Stabler just edges out fellow NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young for the top prize of left-handed quarterback with the most wins.

The breed is unfortunately dying out. Cowboys backup QB Kellen Moore is currently the only left-handed signal caller in the NFL. According to, there hasn’t been a single left-handed quarterback taken in the last six NFL Drafts.

The Crimson Tide may have a knack for finding the best lefties. Freshman QB in waiting Tua Tagovailoa is left-handed. This was due to his father switching him over according to

“You know,” Galu Tagovailoa said well over a decade later, “I switched him to a left hander. But he’s actually a right hander.”

“It just became fluent and he just grew into it,” Galu Tagovailoa told “That’s the crazy part about it. I never thought I could make him adapt to that. As we constantly kept putting the ball on his left hand, eventually he grew into throwing the ball with his left.”

Stabler threw for 2,196 yards and 18 touchdowns in three seasons with the Crimson Tide. More recently, Tim Tebow led the Florida Gators to two National Championships using his left hand. David Greene at Georgia won SEC offensive rookie of the year in 2001 and completed 214 passes without an interception in his senior year.  Jared Lorenzen at Kentucky was also known for use of his left arm.

Could Tagovailoa be the next great lefty out of the SEC? Only time will tell, but Stabler, Tebow and Greene were clearly one of the best.
