On the heels of an investigative story by Sports Illustrated on Monday that claimed players on Alabama’s 2009 national championship team accepted money to sign autographs, the starting QB of that squad is speaking up.
The story focused on the time period in December before Alabama’s national championship game against Texas and mentions defensive lineman Terrence Cody and cornerback Marquis Johnson, although it hints at the involvement of other players.
On Tuesday morning, Greg McElroy discussed the report on SiriusXM radio.

“You know how many balls and helmets and things that you sign over the course of a season? I mean hundreds upon hundreds of things. Never took a dollar for anything. Ever. Never once,” McElroy said. “And I know people are trying to make a huge deal of this. I can’t speak on behalf of Marquis Johnson or Terrence Cody.
“One of the guys that was listed, I don’t even know who he is. Rod Woodson, I honestly don’t even know … he might have been on the team. I don’t know.”
While McElroy acknowledges why the story has garnered a lot of attention with it being a national championship team, he believes it’s overblown based on the fact that players put their signatures on numerous things, especially during the holidays.
As for whether he was ever asked to sign something for money and declined, McElroy can’t even recall that taking place.
“I don’t remember any of that. First of all, I don’t recall ever, ever signing 40 items for one person,” McElroy said. “I’m pretty generous about stuff like that, for sure I’ll gladly sign stuff for kids no matter what, have no problem doing it, but 40 items or whatever what was listed? That seems like a bit of a stretch.”
A man by the name of Cliff Panezich was a focus of Sports Illustrated’s piece, and it was Panezich who was said to offer Crimson Tide players money for their autographs.
McElroy said he looked the man up and said he’s never seen the man in his life from what he can remember. He also said he’d “never take money under those circumstances.”
