James Foster says Florida State, LSU ‘pushing hard’
Perhaps the main storyline for Florida State’s 2018 recruiting class over the final months before National Signing Day is unraveling the mystery of what coach Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles plan to do at quarterback.
For a majority of the cycle, it was clear that the quarterback board had one name on it: 5-star Kennesaw [Ga.] Harrison passer Justin Fields.
After Fields committed to Georgia last month, the Seminoles have been forced to go back to the drawing board.
One name that has started to emerge is 3-star Montgomery [Ala.] Lanier quarterback James Foster.
Foster rates as the nation’s No. 14 dual threat quarterback and the No. 365 player overall in the 2018 cycle per 247Sports.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Foster, who recently backed off an early commitment to Missouri, has schools such as Alabama, Florida State, Louisville and LSU vying to host him on official visits, as detailed by SEC Country’s Sam Spiegelman.
In fact, the Tigers and Seminoles have separated themselves from the pack in Foster’s recruitment.
“I’d say they’re [LSU] tied with Florida State,” Foster told Spiegelman. “I really like them and Florida State. LSU has been pushing hard. They’ve told me all I wanted to hear, and to compete for a job as a freshman, that’s the best thing I’ve heard. All I want is a shot and an opportunity. When LSU texts me, it’s crazy because if they do it in the morning, Florida State will text me like 2 minutes later. It’s like they know LSU texted me. Both have been coming pretty hard.”
The Tigers will get first crack at hosting Foster as the talented signal caller from the Yellowhammer State will make his way to Baton Rouge this weekend for his first official visit to see LSU take on Arkansas.
As Spiegelman noted, while Foster hasn’t ruled a decision out this weekend, it’s more likely that he follows through on plans to take all of his official visits before making a final decision.
That is the optimal scenario for the Seminoles in this case.
Still, the two pieces of key news to watch for with Foster is if and when he sets the official visit to Tallahassee and if and when he’s officially offered by Fisher — something that has yet to happen.
Regardless, it’s clear that Foster is a target that the staff has identified as a potential solution to their quarterback quandary moving forward.
4-star OL Trey Hill still considering Florida State
With three offensive linemen committed, the Seminoles are still actively trying to pursue players at that position in hopes adding more talent and depth to a position of need.
One player Fisher and his staff would love to land is 4-star Warner Robins [Ga.] Houston County guard Trey Hill.
The 6-foot-3 1/2, 346-pound Peach State native ranks as the nation’s No. 2 guard and the No. 34 player overall in the 2018 cycle per 247Sports.
According to Rusty Mansell of Dawgs247, Hill could make a decision on where he will play college football soon.
The timeline makes sense given that Hill will be an early enrollee.
Hill is coming off a visit to in-state power Georgia, who appears to be trending in a positive direction with the massive lineman.
However, Auburn, Clemson and Florida State are still in the running to land Hill, as detailed by Mansell.
While Hill has visited Tallahassee many times over the course of his recruitment, he has yet to make a visit during the fall. It’s hard to imagine the Seminoles having a great shot at Hill unless that changes.
Outside of the Bulldogs, Auburn appears to be the top out-of-state option for Hill at this time.
For the Seminoles, time is running out in their quest to land one of the premier interior linemen in the 2018 cycle in Hill.
