Florida State recruit calls rumors surrounding Jimbo Fisher’s job status ‘very unsettling’

During his weekly press conference Monday, at which he repeatedly declined to address rumors that Texas A&M has offered him its head coaching position, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said he didn’t think the rumors would impact the Seminoles’ recruiting efforts.

Wednesday, one of the team’s longest-committed recruits begged to differ.

Amari Gainer, a 4-star linebacker from Tallahassee who has been committed to the Seminoles since May, told Wayne E. McGahee III of the Tallahassee Democrat that the turmoil surrounding Fisher has him considering other options.

“It’s very unsettling,” Gainer, who previously planned to enroll early at Florida State, said. “If your head coach can leave before you get there and you have to go in blind and not knowing anything. It’s pretty unsettling not knowing what’s going on. I know all of the rest of the recruits think the same thing.”

Gainer told McGahee that he has been talking to coaches at other schools while the drama between Fisher and the Florida State administration unfolds. Florida State athletics director Stan Wilcox has stated that he would like Fisher to return to the school, but the administration has reportedly begun making preparations in case Fisher leaves.
“I’ve talked to Ole Miss, Texas, Louisville, and Oklahoma, so I’m just waiting and seeing,” Gainer said. “Just in case he does take the job or even if he doesn’t because of all the rumors and coaches changing.”

Gainer made it sound like the greatest source of frustration for him and other Seminole recruits hasn’t necessarily been Fisher’s willingness to listen to Texas A&M’s offer, but the lack of transparency from the Florida State coaching staff.

“Basically we’re confused and angry and wanting to know what’s going on,” Gainer said. “To either choose whether to trust the next staff up or go somewhere else because no one knows. We haven’t gotten any contact from the coaches.”

If Gainer, a Tallahassee native and Seminole legacy, is incensed enough to switch his commitment as a result of the turmoil, the Florida State recruiting class as a whole could be in major trouble.
