Florida experienced some moving parts with its 2018 recruiting class this week.

The Gators dropped a few spots in the team rankings after losing one of the top prospects from their commitment list and added a surprise pledge from South Florida.

Where Florida’s class ranks

Florida’s 2018 class is ranked No. 10 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC, according to the 247Sports Composite. Nine of the Gators’ 18 commits are 4-star recruits. Florida has the SEC’s third-highest average star rating (89.74) behind Alabama (91.37) and Georgia (90.69).

Latest news

Ja’Marr Chase, a top-100 overall prospect and the nation’s No. 6-ranked WR, backed off his pledge to the Gators on Wednesday after growing concerned about the coaching uncertainty at Florida and wanting to explore more options.

His de-commitment brought the Gators back down to 18 class members after they added 3-star athlete Nigel Bethel to the class Sunday. The move caught many surprise because of Bethel’s low recruiting profile, but interim coach Randy Shannon indirectly addressed the decision in his Monday press conference (see story below).
