Dan Mullen talks recruiting

Florida signed a top-3 recruiting class for three consecutive years from 2006-2008.

New Gators coach Dan Mullen expects nothing less now that he’s back in Gainesville.

“When I was here 10 years ago, we were blessed to have some truly spectacular players,” Mullen said in his introductory press conference.

Those kind of Florida players have been few and far between over the last decade. Since Urban Meyer’s departure, the Gators have signed just two top-3 classes in the last seven years.

UF athletics director Scott Stricklin said he wanted to make Florida football fun again with this coaching hire. Mullen knows the type of talent it takes to make that happen.

“It’s fun calling plays when Tim Tebow is your quarterback and he’s throwing the ball out to a Percy Harvin or a Louis Murphy or a Bubba Caldwell,” Mullen said. “And the defensive guys: When you have a Joe Haden out there covering field, a Brandon Spikes hitting people at linebacker. You look at some of the talent we had here, it was special.”

Mullen will hit the recruiting trail Tuesday to begin making contact with Florida commits, targets and potential prospects. The Gators haven’t signed a consensus 5-star recruit since 2015.

“We have to do a great job recruiting to get that level of player back here to lead us back to championships,” Mullen said. “It’s a new challenge for everybody in college football because we have an early signing day coming up, and recruiting is the lifeblood of the program.”

Mullen offers MSU commits

Mullen extended offers Monday to the two highest-ranked commits in Mississippi State’s 2018 class.

Stephen Guidry and Malik Heath, a pair of 4-star wide receivers, both spoke to Mullen after his presser and now have the opportunity to follow him to Florida.

Guidry is the nation’s No. 2 overall JUCO recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings, while Heath is a top-200 prep prospect and the No. 1-ranked player in Mississippi.
