GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Prior to media with the media and formally addressing the masses as Florida’s newest head coach, Dan Mullen took the time on Monday to meet with the players he inherited.

His main message: No matter where they are, Mullen wants his players doing everything they can to be the best.

“I don’t care if you’re competing out there on the football field, you’re competing in the weight room, you’re competing in conditioning … when you walk in the classroom, they also put a number on the top of that test and you compete,” Mullen said. “You might not cover Math 101 test scores and that might not be on the ticker, but someone wins and someone loses.

“We’re going to be a team that competes in everything we do, and you’d better take that seriously and making sure that we are that mindset that, that we’re competing as much in the classroom as we are going to compete on the field and we’re just going to be competitors in life.”

Mullen said he will meet with again with the players in the near future to go more in-depth on his expectations and what his standards are with the program.

But for now, he told them to rest up.

“Because when they come back in January,” Mullen said, “it’s probably going to be something they have never even experienced in their life before, our off-season conditioning program.”

Meanwhile, a host of players responded on Twitter to the meeting with Mullen. All were optimistic about the future.

Here are the highlights.
