Football season is here

After more than three weeks of preseason camp and little insight on the quarterback competition, game week is finally upon us. No. 17 Florida will face No. 11 Michigan in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday to open the 2017 season and begin coach Jim McElwain’s third season with the Gators. To close out camp and usher in a new season, SEC Country beat writer Ryan Young and I did a roundtable discussion that took a look at Florida’s main questions heading into the season and also ranked who we each believe are the 10 most important players for Florida. Young also ranked Florida’s position groups from strongest to weakest and took a look at Michigan’s preseason camp.

Sports Illustrated: How Florida makes the College Football Playoff

Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples on Friday wrote about the 5 SEC teams with a chance — no matter how slim — of making the College Football Playoff. Here’s an excerpt of what he had to say about Florida:

“If one of the three [quarterbacks] emerges and gives Florida more than it got out of the position last year, this season could get very interesting. This is the best line and the best skill position group the Gators have put around their quarterback since McElwain’s arrival. The defense saw a ton of talent jump to the NFL and also lost safety Marcell Harris to a torn Achilles tendon, but it should remain stout even if it isn’t quite as dominant as it was in recent years. Stars such as linebacker Jarrad Davis are gone, but youngsters such as David Reese [Davis’ replacement] played plenty of snaps last year and look ready to step in.”
