As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

Many high school players pull double duty for their football team, but few are as impactful as Dante Lang.

The Florida commit plays both sides of the ball for Boca Raton High school, starting at defensive end and tight end for the Bobcats. Defense is where he has been most valuable to his team, but the Gators staff want to utilize his skill set in their offense.

“The coaches have always liked what I can do at tight end,” Lang told SEC Country. “It’s not a new position for me. I played some tight end last season and I do it in 7-on-7. And I’ve been focusing on it more now that I’m committed.”

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Lang has played well offensively in his first few games of the 2017 season. In his Week 1 highlights below, Lang shows off a solid repertoire at the tight end position and also a bone-crushing block on defense during an interception return.

“I feel like I’m putting it together,” Lang said of becoming a full-time tight end. “The Florida coaches think it’s a good move. I know what the D-ends do already because I’ve played the position.

“So it helps with my hand movement and I already know how to block. I’ve been practicing on my routes and those are good. My hands, too. It feels like I’ve always been a tight end.”

Lang said Florida tight ends coach Greg Nord played a big role in his recruitment. Nord contacted Lang consistently after offering him and landed his commitment at Friday Night Lights.

“Coach Nord checked on me every day and he became family to me, not a coach,” Lang said. “I knew three weeks before I committed that I was going to Florida because he showed he really wanted me and cared about me. He went crazy when I committed.”

So did Gators coach Jim McElwain and running backs coach Greg Nord, who recruits Lang’s area.

“Coach Mac was excited about everything. I don’t think he expected me to commit but he was happy when I did,” Lang said. “Coach Seider played a part in my recruitment, too. He’s from the 561, so we’re like family.

“Once I came for Friday Night Lights, I knew Florida was home. … I felt like they’re about to win a championship. That’s my goal, so that’s where I want to be.”

Here’s some more clips of Lang in action at tight end.
