Amari Burney happy with hire

Florida is expected to have more than a half dozen early enrollees in January, including 4-star athlete Amari Burney.

He committed to the Gators on June 1 and told SEC Country he planned to sign with UF regardless of the coaching outcome.

With Dan Mullen landing the job, Burney’s patience paid off.

“I’m happy with the hire,” Burney said. “He’s got a lot of energy and he’s a confident coach. You know, he left a place that he had been so for long so that means he really loves Florida.

“You can just tell he wanted to come back and be a Gator again. He knows what it takes to win at Florida and it’s just great to see him get the job.”

Burney, who grew up a Florida fan, remembers when Mullen was the coordinator for the Gators and believes his style offense can turn things around on that side of the ball. ‘

“It was fun to watch the Gators back when they had Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin. I think he’s going to bring that back,” Burney said. “The defense is always solid. If the offense starts rolling, then you won’t be able to stop us.”

Burney spoke to Mullen this week and locked in his pledge with the Gators, finalizing his intentions to sign early in December.

“Yes sir, I’m all in,” Burney said. “He basically told just me to get ready because there’s going to be a lot of competition in the spring. You can just tell that he’s got a plan and he’s ready to win.”

Burney said he will officially visit UF in a couple weeks and looks forward to spending time around the new staff. He added that Florida’s commits are excited about Mullen.

“The process was kind of shaky for us, but all the recruits wanted to wait on the hire,” Burney said. “Now that we have a head coach, everybody likes Coach Mullen. I think a lot of people are going to stay.

“We’re all in a group chat and one of the commits shared that graphic where he ranked first in everything, and that really got our attention. So we were hype when we found out we were getting him.”
