It’s always a special moment when a walk-on player learns they are earning a scholarship — and that’s without a t-shirt cannon, a friend and a FaceTime with an elated mother.
Minnesota kicker Justin Juenemann was surprised with a scholarship earlier this week with all those elements.
In front of the whole team, first-year coach P.J. Fleck entered the room with Kyle, a Gophers fan who has been at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Children’s Hospital, and a t-shirt cannon. Kyle spoke with the team and said Juenemann was one player in particular that he always saw visiting the hospital.
Fleck then handed the t-shirt gun to Kyle and had him fire a shirt to Juenemann.
The senior caught the t-shirt but didn’t realize its meaning at first. He eventually unfurled it and read “Justin, congrats on earning a scholarship!” as his teammates went wild.
Juenemann, who has never appeared in a game for the Gophers, later held up the shirt on a video call with his speechless mother.
Fleck posted the video on his Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.

“I’ve never seen anybody serve and give more than that guy,” Fleck said of Jeunemann.
