Final thoughts on Blue Smith and Ohio State, full weekend of high schools games on tap

Recruiting never stops, and if you take a day off, you fall behind. Join us every night for a daily recap of Ohio State recruiting news, insight on what’s happening behind the scenes, and for a glimpse at what’s coming next.

Final Thoughts: L’Christian Smith

After months of waiting, months of delayed announcements, and months of back and forth, Blue Smith is set to make his college decision on Sunday afternoon.

The country’s fourth-ranked athlete — who plans to play wide receiver in college — will announce his choice from a final group that includes Ohio State, Kentucky and Cincinnati. Back in July, at The Opening Finals in Oregon, Smith told Land of 10 why those schools were his finalists.

Cincinnati is the hometown option for Smith, who attends high school about an hour north in suburban Dayton. The Bearcats have a coaching staff that Smith is familiar with, as most come from Ohio State. He likes the relaxed atmosphere and the “family” feeling that new coach Luke Fickell has brought to campus.

Kentucky is the school that has been consistently involved with Smith, and they always show him “the love.”

“Whenever I go down there, there’s just such a feeling of home,” Smith said of Kentucky. “Coach [Vince] Marrow and Coach [Mark] Stoops always treat me so well and give me so much love.”

In Columbus, there’s the dream school, Ohio State. The Buckeyes, though, had a few months at the start of the year where they seemed to lose track of Smith. Then Urban Meyer got involved, and in May the momentum in Smith’s recruitment appeared to swing back toward the Buckeyes.

Since then, there have been multiple plans for a commitment, a number of date changes and rumors going every which way. Why? Because it’s fun, according to Smith.

“Honestly, it’s just to keep people guessing,” Smith, whose nickname is Blue, told Land of 10. “Like I said at the beginning, when all this started, I was going to take as long as I needed. I am not going to have a date, I’m going to commit when I am ready to commit. Because you know what? It’s fun. I mean, sometimes I just want to get away because it can get overwhelming, but it’s fun for the most part.”

His focus now is off of recruiting and on winning a state championship with Huber Heights Wayne. It’s time for a choice.

Final Call: Ohio State edges out Kentucky.

Monster high school games across country with Ohio State ties

Last weekend was a sampler plate for high school football games. This weekend is the main course.

Ohio State commit Jaiden Woodbey and his No. 4-ranked St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) Braves are in Fort Lauderdale to take on No. 5-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas. That game is at 7 p.m. Friday on ESPNU.

Buckeyes quarterback commit Emory Jones and Heard County (Ga.) will be on ESPNU at 3 p.m. Saturday. He’ll take on Stanford quarterback commit Jack West and Saraland (Ala.).

Also on Saturday, Buckeyes verbal Teradja Mitchell and the No. 32-ranked Bishop Sullivan Catholic (Virginia Beach) Crusaders will host Tyson Campbell, Patrick Surtain Jr., Andrew Chatfield, Nester Silvera and the rest of the American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) Patriots at 6 p.m. That game is available on FloFootball.com.

If you’re looking for a talent-stuffed nightcap on Saturday, you can find that on ESPNU. Taron Vincent leads the IMG Academy Ascenders against Chandler (Ariz.) High School at 10:30 p.m. IMG has more talent on its roster than any “high school” team in the country and is worth watching just to see a couple dozen of the nation’s future college stars.

How to watch Master Teague III and Trey Knox tonight

Speaking of Ohio State-related games worth watching, if you’re looking for a way to watch running back commit Master Teague III, you can do that here.

Teague and Trey Knox will travel with their Blackman (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) teammates to Evensville, Tenn., to take on Rhea County. A week ago, in his season opener, Teague collected 341 all-purpose yards and four scores.

You can check out those highlights below.
