Fan Sound Off: Mississippi State blanks Charleston Southern 49-0

Heisman Trophy-Nick Fitzgerald

The Mississippi State fan base has reason to be excited for the 2017 season after the Bulldogs put on an impressive showing in Week 1, downing Charleston Southern 49-0 in Starkville.

Nick Fitzgerald and the Mississippi State offense racked up 555 total yards, the 19th time since 2014 that the Bulldogs produced 500 yards or more. That’s more than any other team in the SEC during that period.

The sophomore quarterback threw for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns before exiting in the third quarter.

Coach Dan Mullen’s decision to play tailback Kylin Hill drew some early criticism, but it proved unfounded as the freshman (62 yards rushing) teamed with Aeris Williams for 145 yards out of the backfield.

It was the defense that set the tone, however. Mississippi State impressed in defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s debut, limiting the Buccaneers to 33 yards, including only 18 on the ground. Charleston Southern failed to move the ball past midfield.

The Mississippi State defense helped its cause with two sacks in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 35-0 lead heading into the break.
