Fan Sound Off: Jarrett Stidham’s debut, defense, Clemson on Auburn minds

The Auburn Tigers beat Georgia Southern 41-7 on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in the Week 1 opener that also served as the debut for QB Jarrett Stidham.

Stidham threw for 2 touchdown passes and ran for another as Auburn cruised. Still, the game wasn’t without some frustrating moments for Tigers fans. Auburn committed 3 turnovers, dropped a first half TD pass and had Kerryon Johnson leave with a hamstring injury. And oh yeah, this was on top of the news that running back Kamryn Pettway, backup QB Sean White and receiver Kyle Davis were suspended and didn’t dress for the opener.

Still, Auburn outgained Georgia Southern 535-78 and allowed just 8 first downs and zero third-down conversions.

The stakes are much higher next week when Auburn travels to defending College Football Playoff champion Clemson.

Here’s what Auburn fans had to say following the win. You can join the conversation here:

Saillens Xavier Dumay:  We put up 41 points and 500+ yards of offense without Pettway, our defense held them under 100 yards total offense. Good game and War Eagle.

Chris Jerkins:   Defense is stout … JS found some rhythm, ran well when needed, and showed some accuracy, but I think our receivers are gonna have to step up.

Jeff Burger:   Not impressed. 2 fumbles, 1 lost, and an interception against Georgia Southern. The receivers did not look good. We will need some serious improvement in the next 7 days or it will be ugly.

Susan Richardson Caton :   Still a long way to go on offense. Hopefully JS will settle down.

JC Cleveland:   Stidham looked like a guy who hasn’t played a meaningful snap in 2 years and had way too much hype weighing on him. We will see a different guy next week. WDE!!!

Brian Hardin:   Definitely need to have a better offensive game next week or we will feel the pain of our first loss. Defensively not too shabby tonight. We had some players step up and make plays and carry our offense. K. Johnson recover quickly. Thank you freshmen.

Elise Kidd Musick:   For a guy who hasn’t played on a football team in 2 years, I think he did great!! Hastings and Martin were nice surprises as well. WDE!!

Quentin Botts:  He needs a little more adjustment but I think he’ll be fine it was rust and nerves. WAR EAGLE

Stephen Foster:   I truly love my Auburn Tigers and I hate to see them in this awful offensive scheme, their hands are tied, Clemson is gonna clean our plow.
