Fan Sound Off: Florida offense stalls in loss to Michigan

The Florida faithful was none too pleased with their No. 17 Gators in Week 1 after Jim McElwain’s squad fell well short of 11th-ranked Michigan in a 33-17 loss to the Wolverines.

And with good reason. Florida managed 192 total yards, including a paltry 11 of them coming on the ground.

There were some highlights on defense. CJ Henderson and Duke Dawson took consecutive Wilton Speight interceptions to the house for touchdowns. But in the end, that was about as much firepower as the Gators could muster.

Check out what Florida fans are saying about the performance, and join the conversation here.

Jared Bell: I just couldn’t believe the amount of missed calls against Michigan. No holding calls, no pass interference calls in pivotal plays that could have seriously affected the outcome of the game. It seems like these refs are getting worse and worse in college and the NFL. Maybe they figured they owed Michigan from how they screwed them against OSU [Ohio State] last year?

Skip Ertz: We need a quarterback that can fulfill a four-year scholarship and not one with only one year of eligibility. Freshmen have the chance to learn and grow. The one-year guy may make it harder to recruit the higher-rated high schoolers.

Douglas Randall: Different season, same issues! Offense stinks and the defense can’t tackle!! I thought that McElwain was supposed to be some kind of offensive genius! Really?? The offense only is able to scratch out 3 points! Defense gives us 2 pick-6s and blocks a punt, something’s gotta give!!

Dan Morris: Poor coaching, poor leadership and no excuses. The lack of 10 suspended players would not have changed the outcome. Coach has the players and his coaches believing his words of wisdom. This year will prove his coaching ability. Two years of a winning record proves nothing. Florida will be lucky to not end up at the bottom of the SEC this year. Winning the SEC East means what? Weak maybe?

Jason Moran: I hope each and every one of you clowns that got suspended from the game, really, was it worth it? I’ve seen high school [teams] play better games than this. This was a joke, how embarrassing.

Freddie Lewis: Jim McElwain should be fired with this poor offensive performance even though he’s not the offensive coordinator. It’s still his responsibility to make sure his offense is working at the level of expectations.

Alan Adcock: The defense was very good when we used a five-man front, like we always have. Every time they used four, we were very bad. Now the coaches need to get that offensive line in shape. They’re too soft, no protection. There’s no QB in the world [that] could do any better until that’s fixed. Next, what happened to using our tight ends and crossing routes and slants to get the ball out quick? This needs to be fixed or [we need] new coaches. This was embarrassing, and I’ve been a Gator for 52 years. This stinks.
