ESPN’s Football Power Index: Ohio State is still better than Alabama

If you think Alabama looked like the country’s most-impressive team during a victory over Florida State on Saturday, ESPN’s Football Power Index doesn’t agree with you.

On Sunday, the latest FPI figures were released, and Alabama remains second behind Ohio State. Auburn (No. 8) and LSU (No. 10) are the other two SEC teams within the top 10. Georgia (No. 13), Tennessee (No. 20), Florida (No. 22) and Mississippi State (No. 23) cracked the top 25.

You can view the complete rankings here, but you can bet the argument over who’s better between Alabama and Ohio State will continue in the coming weeks.

There’s no doubt that the Crimson Tide were impressive in dispatching Florida State 24-7 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But Ohio State struggled for much of its game against Indiana on Thursday. More will be learned about the Buckeyes next Saturday, when they face Big 12 power Oklahoma in Columbus.

Alabama, meanwhile, doesn’t figure to be tested again for a while. The Crimson Tide face Fresno State next Saturday in their home opener. They open SEC play against Vanderbilt on Sept. 23.
