An insane Bedlam game between two highly-ranked teams still left a lot to be desired from Oklahoma and its defense.
ESPN analyst Booger McFarland wasted little time bringing up the fact the Sooners surrendered 52 points to Oklahoma State on Saturday and questioned their credibility as a College Football Playoff team.
Well that didn't take long. One minute into ESPN show, Booger McFarland asks: "Can you be a top-4 team when you give up 52 points?" #Sooners

In fairness to Mike Stoops’ crew, the only other offense on the level of Oklahoma’s is Oklahoma State, and the Cowboys had every chance to win on Saturday. The Sooners defense gave up a lot of big plays, but the difference in Bedlam was the Sooners making key stops.
Oklahoma hasn’t definitively separated itself as one of the top-four teams in the country, and if it does make the College Football Playoff, it would be the first team to get in and give up 50-plus points in a regular season game.
Here is a breakdown of the 12 teams to make the College Football Playoff in the postseason format’s short history, and how many times those teams have given up more than 30 points:
- Ole Miss, L 23-17
- Auburn, W 55-44
Ohio State (Champion)
- Ohio State, L 35-21
- Michigan State, W 49-37
- Arizona, L 31-24
- UCLA, W 42-30
- Cal, W 59-41
- NC State, W 56-41
- Georgia Tech, W 37-35
- NC State, W 56-41
- North Carolina, W 45-37*
- Tulsa, W 52-38
- Texas, L 24-17
- Baylor, W 44-34
- Ole Miss, L 43-37
- Nebraska, L 39-38
- Louisville, W 42-36
- Florida State, W 37-34
- Pittsburgh, L 43-42
- Virginia Tech, W 42-35*
- None (31-0 loss to Clemson)
- Ole Miss, W 48-43
- Arkansas, W 49-30
- None (24-7 loss to Alabama in College Football Playoff)
* Conference Championship Game
Oddly enough, Alabama is the lone team to make the playoff all three years and it has given up 40-plus points in one game each season, whether it be a win or a loss. And most would probably agree 2014 Auburn and 2015 and ’16 Ole Miss aren’t on the level of Oklahoma State.
Ohio State and Washington are the only teams to make the playoff and not give up 30-plus points in a regular season game, but neither team won the national championship.
If the Sooners can beat the Horned Frogs of TCU on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, they’ll be in good shape to make the conference title game and inch closer to a top-four spot.
