Duke-Army preview, keys to the game
Duke began the football season 4-0, its offense humming with quarterback Daniel Jones at the helm. The Blue Devils looked well on their way to a return to the postseason after missing out on a bowl game last year for the first time since 2011.
But once things started to go wrong, they went really wrong for the Blue Devils.
Duke enters its Week 11 matchup with Army having lost five games in a row. The Blue Devil offense that averaged 40.5 points per game in the first four weeks of the season has mustered just 11.4 points per contest during its five game losing streak.
If the Duke has any chance at making a bowl game, it likely has to beat Army, with the final two weeks of the season bringing matchups against Georgia Tech at home and Wake Forest on the road. However, doing so will be a challenge.
While Duke has lost five straight, the Black Knights enter Saturday’s matchup winners of their last five games and 7-2 overall.
As usual, this year’s Army team is almost wholly reliant on its triple-option rushing attack. The Black Knights lead the nation in rushing attempts and rushing yards per game, at 365.4 yards per game. They have run the ball 525 times this season and thrown it just 56.
Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw is the engine of the triple-option offense. Bradshaw has rushed for 125.8 yards per game and nearly 8 yards per carry on the year. Those marks rank 10th and 11th in the FBS, respectively.
Duke has been fairly solid against the run on the season, allowing 142.1 yards per game on the ground to its opponents. However, in the last three games, the Blue Devils have struggled mightily guarding the run. Duke’s opponents have averaged 250 rushing yards per game in that span.
On the other side of the ball, Duke has seen a dip in its rushing numbers cause its passing attack to hurt as well. The Duke offense bottomed out in its last game against Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils mustered just 183 total yards — 101 on the ground and 82 through the air — in a 21-3 loss.
Army, meanwhile, is coming off its best defensive performance of the season, a 21-0 shutout of Air Force.
Duke will likely look to establish its running game against Army. The Black Knights have been vulnerable against the run at times this season. They rank 64th nationally, giving up 167.4 rushing yards per game. Against the pass, Army ranks 28th.
However, if the Duke offense can consistently run the ball early, that will likely open up opportunities for Jones to do damage down the field.
