Question of the day: Monday, Nov. 6, 2017

In case you are wondering why you have never previously noticed the LSU question of the day, it’s because you’re highly observant. This is a brand-new feature meant to give a voice to you, the fan. Usually I’m the one asking the questions of LSU coaches and athletes, but for one question every weekday we are giving you the floor.

Our first question is one that I’ve put zero thought into this season, yet is a very good one for precisely that reason.

The inaugural question comes via Trevor Robichaux on Facebook. Congrats, Trevor. You’ll forever live in SEC Country history.

Specifically, Trevor is asking about the No. 18 in 2018 once the Tigers lose seniors J.D. Moore and Christian LaCouture. And now that I’ve given myself a moment to think it over, I’d say the answer to this is a resounding yes.

It’s unusual to see 18 passed down to a player who is not a senior, but it’s not unprecedented. Richard Dickson and Tre’Davious White both wore 18 as juniors and seniors. And in all likelihood next year is shaping up to be Devin White’s last in Baton Rouge. (Though he could do like Tre White and make a surprise return for his senior season despite potentially lofty draft prospects.)

But the difference when it comes to Devin White and every other player to don 18 for LSU is not talent, but leadership. He really does have an unusual amount of maturity for a player his age. White isn’t just a sophomore, but a young one at the age of 19.

Yet he is the guy getting to the facility early on Sundays to watch game film from the previous night. He’s the guy who took maximum accountability when LSU lost to Troy, helping rally the troops when the season could have taken a terrible turn.

The Alabama loss was another excellent example of his leadership. As he and fellow sophomore Rashard Lawrence walked off to the locker room, he turned to Lawrence and said, “We’ll be back. We’ll be back.”

Lawrence is another very good candidate for No. 18 himself.  He apologized for the Alabama loss on Twitter even though no one in their right mind would lay that defeat at Lawrence’s feet. But something tells me Lawrence likes wearing No. 90 just fine. Sometimes big guys are very fond of their big numbers.

Given a whole offseason, I’m sure I could think of some other guys who would make fine additions to the 18 Club. But even if those names do pop into my head, I believe Devin White is a candidate who’s difficult to top.
