Danny Kanell ranks Michigan ahead of Ohio State, snubs Penn State

Danny Kanell is never afraid to speak his mind. The Fox Sports analyst had an interesting personal top-8 rankings on Monday after most of the Week 1 games finished.

Not only did he have Clemson and not Alabama ranked No. 1, but he had unusual rankings for three Big Ten teams.

  • Michigan ranked No. 3, one spot ahead of Ohio State
  • Penn State was left off the list

In the preseason AP and Coaches Polls, Ohio State ranked No. 2 and Michigan ranked Nos. 10 and 11. The Buckeyes dominated at Indiana, 49-21, while Michigan pushed around ranked Florida, 33-17.

Meanwhile, Penn State isn’t in the top 8. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 6 in the major polls, routed Akron 52-0. Yet that’s not enough for Kanell to rank Penn State ahead of Oklahoma State (won 59-24 against Tulsa) or USC (struggled 49-31 against Western Michigan).

Kanell had plenty of replies in response to his different rankings. Many were about Penn State. The analyst responded to one in particular.

“This list will fluctuate a lot the first few weeks of season,” Kanell tweeted. “As soon as PSU beats quality opponent they’ll jump in. Don’t take personally.”

Kanell has defended Penn State in the past. When Ohio State got into the College Football Playoff last year ahead of Penn State despite losing to the Nittany Lions, Kanell said the Buckeyes’ brand played a part.
