COLUMBUS, Ohio — With a big matchup on deck, the Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked No. 2 in the latest edition of the AP Top 25. The Buckeyes were also No. 2 in the coaches poll released earlier Tuesday.
Ohio State shook off a slow start against Indiana and finished strong for a 49-21 victory to open the season. The Buckeyes got the ball to their playmakers in the second half, and the pass defense improved after an inconsistent first half.
“I think it was a good first game,” head coach Urban Meyer said. “Obviously we made such an emphasis on deep balls, and I am somewhat disappointed because they bobbled it a little bit. That’s why you go to work, give them the day off tomorrow, and go back to work on Saturday. The effort is there, our receivers played their tails off. We just have to execute.”
The Buckeyes have a top-10 matchup on deck with Oklahoma coming to Columbus on Saturday. College GameDay will be on hand for what should be an entertaining and revealing matchup.
Previous rankings (Coaches/AP): No. 2/No. 2
New rankings (Coaches/AP): No. 2/No. 2
Last result: 49-21 win against Indiana
What it means: Ohio State obviously looks the part one game into the season, but so does No. 1 Alabama. The Crimson Tide took apart Florida State in a top-5 matchup in Atlanta. The Buckeyes now face their own stiff test with Baker Mayfield and the Sooners coming to Ohio to complete the home-and-home series. Ohio State fared quite well last year in a blowout win, but Oklahoma could provide a stiffer challenge this year.
If the Buckeyes do win, they’ll establish themselves alongside Alabama as the clear-cut two best teams in the country and might even be able to take some first-place votes depending on how the game goes. By starting so high, though, Ohio State has put itself in a favorable playoff position. Even an early season loss wouldn’t be the end of the world because of how high the Buckeyes are already ranked.
