COLUMBUS, Ohio — How much will Ohio State’s loss to Iowa hurt the Buckeyes in the latest College Football Playoff rankings?
The Buckeyes opened at sixth in the first College Football Playoff rankings, which is right in line with what Land of 10 projected last week. That ranking put Ohio State right in the mix for a playoff berth, but those hopes for a shot at a national championship were short-lived.
No two-loss team has made the College Football Playoff in the brief history of this current playoff format, and this year doesn’t look likely to change that trend. However, the Buckeyes will get a better picture of just how dire those hopes are — spoiler alert: it’s not going to be good — when the new rankings are unveiled Tuesday night.
Ohio State College Football Playoff projection
It’s pretty easy to reel off the teams that will certainly be ahead of Ohio State in the Nov. 7 CFP rankings. None of the five teams that were already ahead of the Buckeyes suffered a defeat. That means you can count on Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Oklahoma remaining ahead of the Buckeyes. No. 7 Penn State should stay behind Ohio State after losing to Michigan State — especially because the Buckeyes beat the Nittany Lions — but TCU, Wisconsin, Miami and Washington also appear to be locks to surge past Ohio State.
With those nine teams virtually certain to be ahead of the Buckeyes, that means 10th is essentially the best-case scenario on Tuesday night. Could Ohio State also be behind other two-loss teams like Auburn and Oklahoma State? It’s certainly possible, especially given the nature of the Buckeyes loss.
Right now, 11th feels like the most likely outcome for Ohio State. Even if the Buckeyes win out, the fact that no top-5 teams lost last weekend when the potential for upsets was high isn’t a good sign for Ohio State’s ability to climb back into the rankings. A conference championship is still possible, but the new College Football Playoff rankings will almost certainly reveal what looks to be an impossible path to a national championship.
