College Football Playoff rankings: Notre Dame ranked No. 3

The College Football Playoff committee kept the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 3 in the second College Football Playoff rankings of the 2017 season.

The  first playoff rankings from the committee came out last Tuesday, Oct. 31. There will be four more rankings — each one coming out on Tuesday until the final rankings, which will be released on Sunday, Dec. 3. Each ranking will include 25 teams, but only the top 4 teams will make the playoffs.

Notre Dame rode its six-game winning streak to its No. 3 ranking last week and then beat Wake Forest on Saturday, 48-37. The Irish sit at 8-1 and are ahead of undefeated teams such as Wisconsin and Miami, but that’s because they have the best loss in the country — a 1-point defeat to Georgia, which was No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday.

The Fighting Irish also have demolished teams. Notre Dame has an average margin of victory of about 25, and that includes victories against N.C. State and USC, both of whom were also in the Top 25 in the first rankings last week.

Notre Dame will have the opportunity to add to its resume as well. The Irish will visit Miami and Stanford in the final three weeks of the regular season. The Hurricanes and Cardinal were ranked at No. 10 and 21, respectively, in the first College Football Playoff rankings.

Even with the one blemish, the margin of error for Notre Dame is zero. The Irish cannot afford another loss, even to one of those highly ranked teams — if they are going to stay in the top 4.
