The College Football Playoff committee moved up the Miami Hurricanes to No. 7 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2017 season.
The committee released the second playoff rankings on Tuesday, Nov. 7. There will be four more rankings – each one coming out on Tuesday until the final rankings, which will be released on Sunday, Dec. 3. Each ranking will include 25 teams, but only the Top 4 teams will make the playoffs.
Despite being undefeated heading into the first playoff rankings last week, Miami came in six spots outside the playoff picture. A big reason why is because the Hurricanes have skated by in recent weeks, beating their last four opponents by just a combined 18 points.
But that changed this week after Miami soundly defeated Virginia Tech, 28-10, on Saturday. Last week, Virginia Tech was No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings and fell to No. 17 on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes have another chance to show their mettle when they face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this Saturday. Notre Dame has been No. 3 in each of the first two playoff rankings.
Obviously, that’s the showdown of the weekend. Miami and Notre Dame have combined to lose just once this year and that was the Irish to No. 1 Georgia by a single point.
While they remain outside the Top 4, it’s difficult to see the Hurricanes staying out of the Top 4 if they finish the regular season undefeated and then win the ACC Championship. They could even jump into the Top 4 next week if they beat Notre Dame.
