College Football Playoff Rankings: Iowa No. 20 in Top 25 poll

Iowa vaulted into the College Football Playoff rankings, coming in at No. 20, when the latest poll was released on Tuesday.

The big question coming into the day was if the Hawkeyes 55-24 victory over then-No. 6 Ohio State last weekend was enough to propel them into the rankings. It turns out it was more than enough.

The best argument for ranking Iowa was the way it manhandled Ohio State. The Hawkeyes, 21½-point underdogs, outclassed their opponent. The victory over the Buckeyes is one of the best in the country this season, and the selection committee will view it positively.

A victory over another Top 25 team, Iowa State, likely helped Iowa’s chances. So did the team’s strength of schedule, a component the selection committee has shown it values in the past. Four of the Hawkeyes’ past opponents currently reside in the Top 25.

The reason Iowa wasn’t a lock for the CFP Top 25 was its record. The Hawkeyes, ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll and unranked in the Amway Coaches poll, are 6-3.

With three games left, there is a chance for Iowa to move up in the rankings. The Hawkeyes will face their second straight Top 10 foe when traveling to Wisconsin on Saturday. A win over the Badgers would do wonders for the team’s ranking. Iowa wraps up the regular season by hosting Purdue and traveling to Nebraska, two contests the Hawkeyes will be favored in.
