College Football Playoff rankings: Iowa State ranked No. 21

A narrow loss to West Virginia caused Iowa State to drop to No. 21 in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night.

The 20-16 defeat at Morgantown, W. Va., was not enough to knock the Cyclones out of the rankings. Tuesday’s appearance marked the second CFP appearance and second post-season poll appearance in the Cyclones’ football history.

The Cyclones still have an outside shot to the Dec. 2 Big 12 championship game in Arlington, Texas.

But the road to Iowa  State’s first Big 12 title game appearance in school history still looks like a long shot. The Cyclones (6-3, 4-2 in conference play) would need to sweep a tough finishing schedule including Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State and road games against Baylor and Kansas State.

Iowa State’s game Saturday against Oklahoma State will begin at 11 a.m. CT and will be shown on ABC/ESPN2. ESPN’s matchup predictor ranks Iowa State’s hopes at winning that game at 36.9 percent.
