Coaching rumors: Some at Tennessee believe Phillip Fulmer could become AD and hire David Cutcliffe as coach

As if the past day couldn’t get any more strange for Tennessee, a report involving Phillip Fulmer and David Cutcliffe leaves more to consider.

On Monday, Football Scoop’s Scott Roussel dropped a report that mentions “a faction at Tennessee” believes high-powered officials at the school might step in and make former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer the Vols’ new athletic director. The piece from Roussel goes on to spell out that such a move would increase the possibility of Duke coach David Cutcliffe, a former Tennessee offensive coordinator, becoming the Volunteers’ next coach.

Here’s more from the story:

After checking back up today we are told there is a faction at Tennessee who believes University leadership might step in, allow John Currie to go find a new job (in a nice way of putting it) and quickly make Phillip Fulmer their new athletic director.

Should that happen, sources we have spoken with believe Fulmer would bring David Cutcliffe in as head coach.

There are many rumors flying about Tennessee’s situation right now. Certainly, it’s easy to envision Fulmer enjoying the athletic director role. Earlier Monday, a report surfaced from Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman that there was increasing pressure from some big-money Tennessee boosters to force out Vols athletic director John Currie after the Greg Schiano fallout.

Stay tuned.
