Coaching rumors: North Carolina’s Larry Fedora could be a candidate at Mississippi State

This season’s college football coaching carousel has been among the most chaotic in recent memory, but so far, the ACC has been excluded. While there will undoubtedly be some turnaround amongst coordinators, none of the 16 teams in the conference has fired its head coach, nor are any expected to.

Tuesday, however, a rumor emerged that North Carolina coach Larry Fedora could be targeted by one of the many SEC schools searching for a new coach: Mississippi State.

Footballscoop.com reported a list of six candidates that Mississippi State is rumored to be interested in after the departure of Dan Mullen for Florida. Among those candidates is Fedora.

Fedora just completed his sixth season as the head coach at North Carolina following four years at Southern Miss, which he led to four consecutive bowl games. Fedora inherited a North Carolina program that. was still under NCAA sanctions, but in his first five years with the Tar Heels, Fedora’s teams went a combined 40-25. North Carolina made bowl games in each of those seasons and won the ACC Coastal Division in 2015.

This season, however, North Carolina went a disappointing 3-9 due largely to a rash of injuries. Fedora is in little danger of being fired — this past offseason, he signed a contract extension through 2022 — but the Footballscoop article said “word has been that Fedora has been eyeing SEC opportunities for the past year or so.” If that is the case, this might be the year he would make the move, especially in a state in which he’s succeeded before.

It seems unlikely that Fedora would be Mississippi State’s top choice for the job. Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Miami defensive coordinator and former Bulldogs coordinator Manny Diaz, Memphis head coach Mike Norvell and SMU head coach Chad Morris have all been widely mentioned as the likely top candidates for the job. Plus, Fedora’s current buyout would be roughly $1.6 million this offseason.

There’s a lot still to be determined in the coaching carousel, but Fedora to Mississippi State would, in theory, make sense for both parties.
