Coaching rumors: Dan Mullen ‘frequently discussed’ as Tennessee possibility, would ‘fit’ with AD John Currie

One report suggests Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen could be a possibility for Tennessee.

Earlier this week, SBNation’s Steven Godfrey reported that Mullen “is the most frequently discussed name” outside Jon Gruden to become the next Volunteers coach , if Tennessee moves past Butch Jones soon. Godfrey added that coaches and agents are approaching the Tennessee position as if it will open soon.

Here’s more from Godfrey’s report:

At other schools, coaches and agents are treating Tennessee like an open job. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is the most frequently discussed name (that isn’t Jon Gruden). Multiple coaching sources confirm Mullen would “fit” with new athletic director John Currie.

It will be interesting to see how the situations in Knoxville and Starkville shake out in the coming weeks. Some have connected Mullen to the open Florida job, given his experience as the Gators offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008.

However, Mullen’s public stance has been that he’s happy as Mississippi State’s coach. As of now, it would be surprising to see Mullen leave Starkville for either the Florida or Tennessee jobs.

Stay tuned.
