Travon Walker names top 4 schools — for now

It seems like every day now, a Clemson target is releasing a refined list of schools he’s considering. Owen Pappoe did it last week, and Travon Walker followed suit on Monday.

Walker, who is from Upson Lee (Thomaston, Ga.), is a top-5 defensive tackle and top-60 overall player in the Class of 2019 per the 247Sports composite. He holds offers from 10 schools — including Clemson, Alabama, Florida State and Georgia.

Four of those schools still have a shot at landing his services. The Tigers join a trio of SEC programs — Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina — as his four finalists, according to his post on Twitter.

“I am blessed to have this opportunity,” Walker told Rivals’ Chad Simmons. “I have a lot of great offers, but these schools stand out most to me right now.”

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound defensive end has jaw-dropping size that he couples with explosiveness to form a player whose appeal to blue-blood programs are understandably coveting.

Walker visited Clemson in September for the Tigers’ 14-6 win against Auburn and he’s visited his other finalists since, including a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., last week.

“When I am at Clemson, it has the hometown feel to it,” Walker told Simmons. “Clemson reminds me a lot of where I live now. It is not too small, but not too big. I like that a lot … Clemson offered me back in January 2017, so they were a little late, but that is OK. I got on their campus, I met with the coaches and we just connected.

“I really like [defensive line] coach [Todd] Bates, [defensive coordinator Brent Venables] and coach Dabo Swinney. They are great guys and we have really bonded. They are the big part of why Clemson is high for me.”

Walker clarified that this isn’t necessarily his final four schools, point-blank period. They’re just the four schools that he’s got at the top for now. In fact, none of them stand out above each other at the moment, and he’s making sure he doesn’t make any rash decisions.

“I am getting closer, but I still want to take my time and be patient to make sure I do all I can to make the right choice. That is what I am working to do.”
