Derion Kendrick pilots South Pointe to state title game

For the fourth year in a row, South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.) is going to be playing for a state championship. The Stallions advanced to the South Carolina 4A title game last Friday with a 67-21 dismantling of Greer.

Derion Kendrick, a Clemson commit who is going to play receiver at the next level, continues to show why he’s among the most talented players in the country — not only at his position, but overall. This year, he’s continued to make play after play that would belong on any recruit’s highlight reel, but Kendrick just keeps putting them out one week after the next.

In South Pointe’s semifinal win, Kendrick had a part in all but one of his team’s touchdowns. He connected on 16 of 21 passes for 240 yards and 2 touchdown passes, and he ran for 162 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground.

“It’s just fun watching him,” South Pointe coach Strait Herron told the Rock Hill Herald after the game. “I’m gonna have to video every Clemson game if I can’t watch it just to see him do that some more. It’s gonna be sorely missed.”

South Pointe’s headed to Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia — the stadium Clemson just got done beating South Carolina in last Saturday — for the state title game against Hartsville, the third time in the last four years the two schools will have met in the championship.

B.T. Potter, Kendrick’s teammate and Clemson kicker commit, booted 7 of his extra points through, and he showed off his leg strength in a Twitter video over the weekend as well.

Kyler McMichael and Greater Atlanta Christian (Norcross, Ga.) are in the state semifinals for the fourth year in a row after beating Jenkins (Savannah, Ga.) 51-14 in the Georgia 3A quarterfinals. GAC has never won the title, despite advancing this far three times prior.

Jordan McFadden on verge of becoming Clemson’s next commitment

The drought appears to be just about over. Clemson hasn’t received a commitment for this recruiting cycle in over five months, but that looks like it’s going to change here pretty soon.

Jordan McFadden (Dorman, S.C.), who has been committed to Virginia Tech since July 4, has been struggling with his decision to stick with the Hokies or flip to his in-state Tigers. It looked like he might have pulled the trigger last week, but Dorman advanced to the state championship and it looks like a decision will be postponed until after the conclusion of the game.

“I still feel strong about Clemson,” McFadden told The State’s Phil Kornblut. “It probably will be Clemson.”
