Comparing Florida State and Clemson by star rating

This is the third edition of the star-rating series, following our breakdowns of the Virginia Tech game and the  matchup against N.C. State last week. Just like against the Hokies, Clemson’s average star ratings came out well ahead of N.C. State, which is primarily composed of 3-star recruits.

Clemson is usually right at the top of the ACC in team recruiting rankings, but the team that’s always managed to be either above the Tigers or close to them has been Florida State. So a closer look at just how much talent is across the board for both teams warrants a look as we lead up to a game that could give Clemson the ACC Atlantic Division with a win.

Clemson offense

Clemson has more 4-star recruits than anything else on offense, including both members of the right side of the offensive line. Kelly Bryant proves each week he deserved more than his 3-star rating, and everyone knows Hunter Renfrow’s story by now.

On average, the rating here is 3.5 stars — not too shabby, if you ask me.

5 stars: 2

  • LT Mitch Hyatt
  • WR Deon Cain

4 stars: 4

  • RB Tavien Feaster
  • RG Tyrone Crowder Jr.
  • WR Ray-Ray McCloud
  • RT Sean Pollard

3 stars: 3

  • QB Kelly Bryant
  • LG Taylor Hearn
  • C Justin Falcinelli
  • TE Milan Richard

Walk-ons: 1

  • WR Hunter Renfrow

The Clemson defense is where the star power really comes through. Of the 11 starters, all but three were at least 4-star recruits coming out of high school, for an average rating of 3.8 stars.

5 stars: 2

  • DT Dexter Lawrence
  • DT Christian Wilkins

4 stars: 6

  • DE Clelin Ferrell
  • DE Austin Bryant
  • LB Tre’ Lamar
  • LB Dorian O’Daniel
  • CB Trayvon Mullen
  • S Van Smith

3 stars: 2

  • LB Kendall Joseph
  • S Tanner Muse

2 stars: 1

  • CB Ryan Carter

Florida State offense

Surprisingly, the bulk of Florida State’s offense is comprised of 3-star recruits: seven of their 11 starters earned that rating in high school. The highest-rated starter on offense is running back Cam Akers, a freshman who has burst onto the scene after starring in Mississippi. Overall, Florida State’s offense has an average star rating of 3.5.

5 stars: 1

  • RB Cam Akers

4 stars: 3

  • LT Josh Ball
  • WR Keith Gavin
  • WR Auden Tate

3 stars: 7

  • QB James Blackman
  • LG Derrick Kelly II
  • C Alec Eberle
  • RG Cole Minshew
  • RT Rick Leonard
  • TE Ryan Izzo
  • WR Nyqwan Murray

Florida State defense

Here is where the talent on Florida State really shows itself. The Seminoles start five players that held 5-star ratings coming out of high school, and just one starter who didn’t carry at least 4 stars. The Florida State defense has an average rating of 4.4 stars, which is jaw-dropping.

5 stars: 5

  • DE Josh Sweat
  • LB Matthew Thomas
  • CB Tarvarus McFadden
  • S Derwin James
  • CB Levonta Taylor

4 stars: 5

  • DE Brian Burns
  • DT Demarcus Christmas
  • DT Derrick Nnadi
  • LB Jacob Pugh
  • S Trey Marshall

3 stars: 1

  • LB Ro’Derrick Hoskins

Notable visitors for Florida State

A handful of notable names will be on hand Saturday. This list isn’t complete and it just hitting a few of the bigger ones.

  • WR Maurice Goolsby (Florida commit)
  • 2019 DE Jaquaze Sorrells (Florida commit)
  • S Quindarious Monday (Auburn commit)
  • In the basketball world, 5-star forward Zion Williamson will be in attendance as well.
